Tutorials :: How to delete old Nvidia display driver remnants in Win 7

Author: divingbrit
Subject: How to delete old Nvidia display driver remnants in Win 7
Posted: Wed Aug 25, 2010 1:09 pm (GMT 1)

Anyone who's serious about gaming and runs a Nvidia card will know that by default once win7 has been allowed to install a driver for your GFX card it got from windows update when installing your OS, it will reinstall this driver automatically if you come to remove it and install another driver. (which you will find on restart after removal)

Most people just install latest driver releases over this base driver and have no problems, but problems can happen by doing so.

There's more than one way to stop windows installing that old driver version but this guide from guru3d I find is the best and cleanest:

1. You will need the Take Ownership reg tweak.
Code: [Select]
http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/add-take-ownership-to-explorer-right-click-menu-in-vista/
2. Once installed navigate to the Driverstore folder @ windows\System32\DriverStore
3. Use the search box to find nv_disp.inf folders
4. Right click the nv_disp.inf* folders and click Take Ownership.
5. Open up the folder's properties and on the Security tab, grant full access to your own account which is now added to the Folders permissions thanks to the take ownership tweak.
6. At this point the files themselves should report that the permissions can't be changed, just ignore your way through these until no more messages come up.
7. Delete the folder.

Repeat steps 4-7 for additional nv_disp.inf* folders

example of what the folders look like:
nv_disp.inf_amd64_neutral_e3981c6eee5931b7

Once done you should do the usual steps to install a display driver show below, and when windows boots after uninstalling your old driver, it will no longer install any old Nvidia driver set and prompt you for a restart.

1. Uninstall your current driver through the control panel.
2. Restart and boot into safe mode (F8).
3. Run Driver Sweeper and maybe even CCleaner.
4. Restart and boot to the regular desktop.
5. Install the new driver.
6. Restart.

There are other ways to stop Win7 from installing drivers it has already downloaded for hardware, but I find this is easier just for graphics cards.
News and Views :: Intel buys McAfee for $7.7bn to tackle hacking and virus threat

Subject: Intel buys McAfee for $7.7bn to tackle hacking and virus threat
Posted: Sat Aug 21, 2010 9:22 am (GMT 1)

Intel, the US microchip giant, has announced a $7.7bn (£4.9bn) deal to buy antivirus software group McAfee.

Paul Otellini, Intel's chief executive, said the deal, the largest in his company's 42-year history, would help the company address the growing threat of hacking and viruses.

Intel yesterday offered McAfee shareholders $48 a share, a 60pc premium to the closing price on Wednesday.

Shares in McAfee jumped by 57pc to $47.04. Intel's shares dropped 3pc to $18.98.

Mr Otellini said the acquisition of McAfee, which is best known for its virus protection software, will help better incorporate security concerns into computers, mobile phones and cash machines.

"With the rapid expansion of growth across a vast array of internet-connected devices, more and more of the elements of our lives have moved online," Mr Otellini said.

"In the past, energy-efficient performance and connectivity have defined computing requirements. Looking forward, security will join those as a third pillar of what people demand from all computing experiences."

Dave DeWalt, chief executive of McAfee, said: "[This] is big news for McAfee and big news for Intel, but bigger news for our combined customers, the security industry and the future of the internet.

"The cyber threat landscape has changed dramatically over the past few years, with millions of new threats appearing every month.

"We are joining forces to tackle this next-generation cybersecurity issue, which impacts everyone and anything connecting to the internet."

Intel has made a string of acquisitions recently to help it expand into the smartphone market, which is dominated by microchips designed by Britain's ARM Holdings.

The McAfee deal is Intel's biggest acquisition since it bought Level One Communications for $2.2bn in 1999.

The deal follows a flurry of consolidation activity in the technology sector, including Hewlett-Packard's acquisition of Palm, the smartphone maker; and software manufacturer Oracle's $7.4bn purchase of computer hardware group Sun Microsystems.

Intel's acquisition of McAfee still requires the approval of McAfee shareholders and regulatory clearance.
_________________
Divers do it deeper, would you agree Anonymous<img src='http://www.sporting-lincs.com/images/diver.gif' onload="javascript:if(this.width > screen.width-200)this.width = (screen.width-200)" onclick="javascript:window.open('http://www.sporting-lincs.com/images/diver.gif','','scrollbars=1,toolbar=0,resizable=1,menubar=0,directories=0,status=0')" alt="Posted image may have been reduced in size.
