News and Views :: Windows 8 won’t play DVDs

Subject: Windows 8 won’t play DVDs
Posted: Tue May 08, 2012 8:16 am (GMT 1)

Microsoft’s new Windows 8 operating system will not play DVDs unless customers buy an extra upgrade, the company has announced.
Users will either have to pay to upgrade to the ‘Media Center’ or download extra, third-party software if they do want to play films.

Microsoft had previously announced that, unlike Windows 7, Windows 8 will not come packaged with the Media Center software as standard.

The official Building Windows 8 blog, justifies the move by claiming that television and DVD use on computers is "in sharp decline". It claims that Microsoft would have to spend "a significant amount in royalties" to offer support for optical media in future software.

Support for online media, however, will be included in Windows 8 including industry standards such as H.264, VC-1, MP4, AAC, WMA, MP3, PCM and Dolby Digital Plus codecs.

New ‘ultrabook’ computers, which Intel and Microsoft see as increasingly driving the adoption of Windows 8, do not have DVD drives built in, and connecting external drives is becoming rare. Windows 8 will also run on tablets, which again do not have DVD drives.

The Media Center also offers TV recording and access to some video-on-demand services. Microsoft says the cost will be “marginal”.

Data indicates, however, that only 6 per cent of Windows 7 users ever used Media Center.

Bernardo Caldas wrote that “Given the changing landscape, the cost of decoder licensing, and the importance of a straight forward edition plan, we’ve decided to make Windows Media Center available to Windows 8 customers via the Add Features to Windows 8 control panel (formerly known as Windows Anytime Upgrade). This ensures that customers who are interested in Media Center have a convenient way to get it. Windows Media Player will continue to be available in all editions, but without DVD playback support. For optical discs playback on new Windows 8 devices, we are going to rely on the many quality solutions on the market, which provide great experiences for both DVD and Blu-ray.”
_________________
Divers do it deeper, would you agree Anonymous<img src='http://www.sporting-lincs.com/images/diver.gif' onload="javascript:if(this.width > screen.width-200)this.width = (screen.width-200)" onclick="javascript:window.open('http://www.sporting-lincs.com/images/diver.gif','','scrollbars=1,toolbar=0,resizable=1,menubar=0,directories=0,status=0')" alt="Posted image may have been reduced in size.
News and Views :: Opponents of the Pirate Bay embargo often miss the point

Author: divingbrit
Subject: Opponents of the Pirate Bay embargo often miss the point
Posted: Thu May 03, 2012 12:49 pm (GMT 1)

When the drink-drive limit and breathalyser testing were introduced in 1967, there was an outcry. Opponents raged at the perceived threat to personal freedom and criticised the technology; many resolved to carry on getting behind the wheel after a skin full, calculating that the chance of being stopped was low.
There have been hints of the same attitude this week in some of the furious reaction online to the news that Britain?s major broadband providers will be forced to block access to The Pirate Bay, the most popular way of finding unlicensed films and music to download for free. To be absolutely clear, I am not suggesting one iota of moral equivalence between the selfish and criminal act of drink-driving and unlawfully downloading an episode of Game of Thrones.

The embargo threatens civil liberties and will be easily circumvented by those determined not to pay for their entertainment, commentators have charged, with plenty of bile aimed at the film and record industries.
The blocks will come into force within weeks for millions of customers of Everything Everywhere, O2, Sky, TalkTalk and Virgin Media, with BT to follow soon after. They are being imposed by the High Court, which is displaying increasing comfort with intervening on the internet.
In the case of mass unlawful downloading it seems to have settled on the view in the last 12 months that any threat to civil liberties is outweighed by the right of copyright holders to protect their property. Senior judges have now considered the human rights implications of cutting off access to two file sharing websites and come down on the side of the entertainment industry in both cases.

On the matter of whether blocks on websites can be circumvented, they did not rule. Technically, the opponents of restrictions on access to The Pirate Bay are absolutely right. The network-literate will be able to tunnel under any barricades that are erected, there are dozens of alternative websites, and new ones can be created in a matter of hours.

All of which rather misses the point. Just as some people still drink drive, some people will always be able to infringe copyright if they want to. The most ardent supporters of The Pirate Bay subscribe to its stated ideological mission to destroy copyright laws and have the technical skills to keep the Jolly Roger flying for as long as they like.

But the hope among film and record executives is that raising a barrier, even a porous one, will mean some people change their behaviour and switch to legal paid services. Some of the ways of circumventing blocking cost money themselves, after all.
Reasonable understanding of their position does not mean they do not deserve criticism for their approach to the internet. Licensing is still too complicated, the catalogues of legitimate services still do not match pirate websites and some some of their legal attacks on individuals have been outrageously vindictive.

But for now, whether it is symbolic or has a real impact on levels of piracy, and even if it will be circumvented, blocking The Pirate Bay is a victory for the men in suits.
